Long Coats For Men

While men’s fashions don’t take nearly the twists and turns that women’s fashions do, there still the fads that come and go, and trends that stay a while and are forgotten. And then there are the classics. There is simply no denying that there is something sexy about a classically dressed man, and in the colder months, a long, rugged, warm coat is certainly part of that.

Long coats for men have been a fashion staple since the First World War, and continue to rise as a practical and stylish wardrobe must. Whether the coat is a long black Matrix-style trench coat, a long fur a la Vin Diesel in XXX, or a rugged, outdoorsy Australian oilskin, a long coat gives a clean line and a sexy silhouette that just can’t be beat.

The trench coat got its start where else, but in the trenches of World War One. These long coats were originally made by Burberry of a material called gabardine, and were reserved just for the officers. Their length made them warm and practical for concealing weapons and supplies, but in the muddy trenches wetness and dirt became a problem. Gabardine was made of a yarn that was treated with waterproofing prior to weaving, and while this was good for everyday use it didn’t stand up to the rigors of the trenches. In time, the material was switched to a rubber coated fabric that was more practical, and the trench coat became available to soldiers as well as officers.

Other long coats for men include the long fur coat or ‘pimp coat’ and the Australian oilskin coat or Dover. Men’s furs are usually more reserved than women’s, often with a sheepskin body and fur collar. They are warm, but not terribly practical for the average man. An Australian Dover has both the classic appeal of a trench coat, with a rugged but modern practicality and lightweight durability. The Dover is constructed to protect the wearer from the elements while not restricting movement, and often come with a detachable liner to adjust to weather conditions.
